Purpose tags give you visibility on the business purpose of teams and groups in your environment and help you to assign the right governance policies.
Create purpose tags that are suited to the types of work being done in your organization. Apply purpose tags to teams and groups yourself or use ShareGate to collaborate with owners on your behalf.

Create purpose tags
Create purpose tags specific to your Microsoft environment, then use them to identify and manage your teams and groups.
For details on how-to, see Create and edit purpose tags.
Tip: As a starting point, you can use ShareGate's default purpose tags.
Apply purpose tags
Let owners choose the purpose tag that they feel best represents the business purpose of the teams and groups they create. ShareGate can collaborate directly with team and group owners on your behalf, giving you visibility and saving you time.
Or, you can take control of your environment by applying purpose tags to teams and groups manually.
For more information on automated and manual methods, see Apply purpose tags.
Relationship with inactivity detection
Apply a custom inactivity threshold to purpose tags to make sure that the amount of time a team or group can be inactive in your environment aligns with its business.
For more information, see Create and edit purpose tags.
Note: Purpose tag inactivity thresholds take priority over your inactivity detection policy threshold.
For example, say your tenant's inactivity detection threshold is 90 days, and you create a purpose tag with a threshold of 30 days. All teams/groups with that purpose tag will be considered inactive after 30 days of inactivity.
