Who has access to ShareGate Migrate?
When setting up ShareGate Migrate
ShareGate Migrate never puts your data in contact with our sites or our servers. Since it is installed locally on your machine, the only communications are between your source and destination SharePoint sites. Your IT department can decide who should have the access that is needed to set up ShareGate.
- License activations - Your ShareGate subscription has one license key and can have 1-, 5-, or 25- license activations for ShareGate Migrate. A license activation represents 1 use of your license key by either a specific user on a specific workstation. You can view and manage your licenses from Settings. For more information, see Machine activations.
- Server extension - To improve performance, it is recommended to install the server extension on the on-premises SharePoint servers you use with ShareGate Migrate. Like any web service, it is executed by an authorized user in ShareGate Migrate. For more information, see Security considerations for the server extension.
- Azure ShareGate migration app - The Azure ShareGate migration app helps reduce throttling in Microsoft 365 and improves how ShareGate Migrate can interact with Microsoft 365. Global administrators can consent the app within ShareGate Migrate or through Microsoft. When consented, all SharePoint administrators will have access to the Office Graph for Microsoft 365 Group and Microsoft Teams creation. For more information, see What is the Azure ShareGate migration app?
When using ShareGate Migrate
The ShareGate Migrate impersonates you in order to connect to the environment and allow you to perform actions. Your network can identify this as an application performing actions and not you directly.
- Required permissions - To perform actions, ShareGate Migrate requires users to have certain permissions at both the SharePoint source and destination. For full details on what permissions a user needs, see Administrative permissions.
- Connection - ShareGate Migrate requires that you connect to your environment when you start a migration. When connecting with the Other user connection method, an encrypted version of your credentials is stored. For the other connection methods, ShareGate preserves the authentication cookies locally. ShareGate Migrate will not save the credentials themselves. For more information, see Connect to SharePoint and Microsoft 365.
