Walkthrough - Copy channels into an existing team

ShareGate's Cloud copy gives you the flexibility to copy a team's channels to another team, with the convenience of cloud access from anywhere.

This article covers our Cloud copy online feature. For information about Copy teams in the migration tool, please see our Copy teams section.

Note: Cloud copy has the same limitations as Copy teams. We recommend reading the Copy teams limitations article before using Cloud copy.

Prerequisites

  • The Azure ShareGate migration tool application is consented to on your source and destination tenant.
    • You can consent to the Azure app when you connect to your tenant with global admin permissions directly in Cloud copy during your first copy.
  • You have global admin or SharePoint admin permissions.
    • If you do not have global admin permissions, you will need Teams admin permissions with your SharePoint admin permissions.
  • You have a working Teams license for the source and destination.
  • You have logged into Teams at least once (in a browser or the Teams app) to access the hosted content.
  • If you copy teams to another tenant, the prerequisites apply to your source and destination.

Note: Cloud copy does not work on GCC or GCC High environments due to some Microsoft 365 restrictions.

How-to

From Cloud copy

  1. Log in to your ShareGate.
  2. Select Cloud copy.
  3. Click Start a copy button
  4. Select Copy channels into an existing team.
  5. Click Next button
  6. If your source tenant is not already connected, click Connect tenant button
    • Use your admin username and password to connect to your tenant in the Microsoft connection prompt.
    • If the Azure ShareGate migration app has never been consented to before, you will get a Microsoft prompt to consent to the app.
  7. Select the tenant from which you want to copy a team.
  8. Click Next button
  9. Start typing the name of the team you want to copy channels from.
  10. When you see your team, select it.
  11. Click Next button
  12. Select all the channels you want to copy to the destination team.
  13. Click Next button
  14. If your destination tenant is not already connected, click Connect tenant button
    • Use your admin username and password to connect to your tenant in the Microsoft connection prompt.
    • If the Azure ShareGate migration app has never been consented to before, you will get a Microsoft prompt to consent to the app.
  15. Select your destination tenant (you can use the same tenant as your source).
  16. Click Next button
  17. Start typing the name of the team you want to copy channels into.
  18. When you see your team, select it.
  19. Click Next button
  20. Adjust your Copy options.
  21. Click Next button
  22. Review your copy parameters on the summary page.
  23. Click Start copy button
  24. Your operation starts, and you are taken to the processing page.
  25. Once your migration finishes, you are taken to the results page that shows you the number of successes, warnings, and errors.
    • Click Export copy report button to download your copy report. For more information, see Copy report.
    • Click Start incremental copy to copy any updates that occurred in your source tenant since your last copy. For more information, see Cloud copy - Incremental copy.

On the Manage page

  1. Navigate to the Manage page.
  2. Filter the Manage page as needed, or use the search bar to find the team you wish to copy.
  3. Select the checkbox next to the desired team.
  4. Click the Three dots button, then select Start a copy.
  5. Proceed to step (4) of the How-to above.

Note: The Start a copy button is only available if you have a single team selected.

Tip: To review your team's information before launching a copy, click on your team in step (3), and you will be able to start the copy from the Three dots menu in the header of your team's details.

Members and owners

Members and owners are only migrated if the channel being copied is private. For public channels, you will have to manually add any missing members and owners manually after your migration.

Members and owners may appear missing at the destination when you migrate a private channel with the Teams app open on your machine. In the destination private channel, select the Files tab to refresh your owners and members.

When you migrate a private channel into a private team for the first time, the ShareGate migration tool will ask you if you want to always add private channel members or never add private channel members. You can change your selection at any time in the Copy options.

Considerations

  • Only 3 Cloud copy operations per user can run simultaneously. Any new copy launched past these 3 operations will be queued and processed when the other ones finish.
  • We recommend using Copy teams in the migration tool if you need to copy many team channels with more granular control.
  • If you close the processing page tab or browser before your migration finishes, you will find your ongoing Cloud copy operation or copy report under Recent copies on the Cloud copy page.
